This years theme is favorite stories from our past.  I chose Wizard of Oz this year as far back as I remember it would come on the tv at least once a year and we would all sit around the tv and watch it as a family.

 

 

 

This wonderful story was written by Frank L. Baum in  1899 it was just the beginning of the popular children series.  It was not till 1904 that it became a stage play.. and the version that we all have come to love was filmed in 1939.

I want to thank Northcott Fabrics for donating the fabric for the skyline and the emerald forest.. I chose to use Stonehenge Graduations Ombre fabrics so that my emerald forest would have different shades for the towers and blue for my sky.

I chose to use red for my fields to represent the poppies that Dorothy and the gang dozed off in after the wicked witch poisoned them.. Glenda the good witch is about to use her magic wand to make it snow.  This scene is just before they fell asleep on their way to Emerald city.

When I first thought of this I googled Wizard of Oz coloring pages and found one that I like.. It turns out that all photos from the  1939 movie are copyrighted so I had to redo the picture that I will offer in my pattern… I drew a new set of pictures.  Im still going to use these copyrighted picture to explain how I did it.

 

I had one sheet of printable fabric so I printed the photo onto it. I really like the EQ fabric paper after trying out different brands.

I found that most all of these types of printable sheets ask you to soak the sheet once it has been printed to remove any extra ink and help set it.. I also like to iron them with a dry iron.

 

 

 

 

You also have the option to press your fabric to Freezer paper shiny side to the wrong side of the fabric using high heat then cut it to the size of a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet to run through the Inkjet printer.  It is recommended to use a good quality  100% Cotton or muslin with a tread count of 200. Then transfer it onto a iron on adhesive like HeatNBond or Wonder Under.

For  My second  set of drawings I ironed some white fabric to some Heat n Bond Light and traced the characters.  I used a piece of glass 2 bins and my OttLite to make a tracing table.

 

 

 

When coloring the pictures, I have found that the Staples crayons give a much more vibrant colour than the Crayola ones.  Then I place paper towel over the pictures and irond the characters so that the wax would melt into the fabric making it permanent. Once colored set them aside while you work on you background.

I cut the strips with of fabric then sub cut the 15 degree angle according to the pattern specifications. Make use you leave a 1/4″ ear tag on each side so that when so that when pressed the edges will lineup.

I started with the sky..Label the pieces with their patch letters so not to get confused.  I like to lay out everything on a design wall.

 

 

Next i started sewing the strips in 2 press every other to the sky blue and the opposites to the city green this way your seams will butt nicely together.

 

The top edge was a bit uneven so I trimmed it straight.

No all i needed to so was sew the yellow brick road with the poppy fields to the bottom of the city.  Once your colouring is all set cut out your people, add the Characters in their position, and applique them onto your pieced background of the yellow brick road and Emerald City. I used a 2.5 satin stitch to sew my characters down. Glinda the good witch of the East got a pink halo representing her bubble.
